Serpent Mound

On Saturday we took the kids to visit the Serpent Mound. All over Ohio there are earthworks that were made by ancient indians. No one knows why they are there. Often they are simple burial mounds but sometimes they are huge undertakings that are quite impressive. There is one by our house called Fort Ancient. It is so large you can't see the entire thing from one vantage point. The problem is that it is very overgrown with trees and bushes so it is kind of hard to appreciate. No one knows if it was really used as a fort, that is just the white man projecting our values onto the indians, or so the museum states. The Serpent Mound is slightly smaller, you can see the whole thing from an observation tower that is nearby. It is obviously a serpent. Still, no one knows why it was built or what it is used for. We just happened to go at the same time there was a pagan/wiccan festival. There were many people there with crystals and crazy music makers sitting on the mound communing with the spirits, I guess. The kids had lots of questions. We summed it all up by telling them that these people were looking for answers in all the wrong places.
