When I was 16 years old and in Young Womens, we would always hate the combined activities with the Young Men that included the deacons. They were so irritating, annoying and downright obnoxious. Instead of Deacons, we called them the Dinkons. Now, fast forward 20 years or so. Now I have my own Dinkon. But he is not obnoxious, right? WRONG! He is the epitome of Dinkon. He makes jokes that are not funny, makes disguisting body noises and then laughs about it, is a sore winner (and loser for that matter) and gets so wound up that he doesn't know when enough is enough. Don't get me wrong. I love the guy. He is always quite helpful around the house. If you need a job done you can always count on Taylor to do it. He is wonderful with the babies and they follow him around the house with something akin to hero worship. BUT, he nevertheless is a DINKON. Here is his latest dinkon antic.
This week was scout camp. All of the boys and their leaders drove down to Cincinnati to attend the boy scout camp. Taylor has been looking forward to this for weeks. He was so excited to leave that he woke Tom up to take him to the leader's house at 0500 when he didn't need to be there until 0545 and it is a 5 minute drive. When they finally got to the scout camp he jumped out of the minivan and began to unload the gear. Evidently they had some carts nearby for the scouts to use to take all of their gear to their campsites. (You can see where this is going, right?) Well, Taylor in all his zeal, grabbed a cart and carelessly rammed it into the leader's rear bumper putting in a nice dent. Now you would think that would douse his enthusiasm, right? Wrong. I can just hear it now, "It was an accident." To Taylor these words give absolution of all wrongs. They are like 10 Hail Mary's to a Catholic. Instead of learning from his mistake he simply loaded up the cart and then jumped on it riding it downhill in the parking lot...right into the side of another leader's car. Dent plus big time paint scratches that time. At this point, the second leader had a deep talk with Taylor. At work we sometimes have to do this with patients. We call it the Come to Jesus Talk. As far as I know Taylor has seen the light and there have not been any other casualties. Of course Tom is going to camp tonight. I hope Taylor, the Dinkon, makes it back. We will also see how much enthusiasm he has after he realizes that, "It was an accident." doesn't take dents out of bumpers or scratches out of paint.
